Architecture, biology and the 21st-century paradigm shift

Eyemovements on a facade

Learn what evolution’s Pre-Set (+ how Biometrics Show Us What We Don’t Want to ‘See’)

We live in a new “Age of Biology” where new findings in cognitive science are expanding our understanding of how we function and came to be. This talk reviews some of this science, culling out information most relevant for architects. It overviews biometric tools commonly used in advertising and product design, to help us see how people ‘unconsciously’ respond to the built environment. Slide show includes images and short videos from some of the first biometric pilot-studies of buildings in New York, Boston + Somerville. While these tech tools can’t tell us how to design, in letting us see the ‘unseen’, they suggest ways to adjust our work so it’s a better fit for both our bodies and brains; or in sum, human nature.

Eye-tracked images above, from a study at Tufts for NYC DDC (Department of Design and Construction) illustrates how differently people respond - without conscious control - to a public library facade when windows are removed.
