Advanced Design Studio: Free Migration

Project Description

Rather than look at global population movement as a crisis, this project normalizes migration by understanding migrants as a diverse group of talented individuals who exist within alternate geographies based not on citizenship, but on shared climate and demographics.

Our proposal constructs a new social and physical infrastructure for migration through three matchmaking protocols. These “policies”—the farm policy, the harbor policy, and the vacancy policy—identify and pool together latent spatial opportunities as a means of hedging collective risk.

These three protocols produce architectural precipitants which form a larger body of products designed and altered to fit local needs through an open source platform. But the space of our proposal does not lie simply in these objects, but rather in the cooperative network of people and places that hedge collective risk, forge new transnational coalitions, and open up new possibilities for mutual benefit and resilience through migration.
