Advanced Design Studio: The Architecture of Community

Project Description

Mobile homes have long been stigmatized in American society and are commonly associated with substandard materials. Their poor reputation has affected their legitimacy as an alternate form of affordable housing, potentially limiting the accessibility of a humane built environment for all individuals. This community of affordable housing types consists of two forms of pre-fabricated construction, including manufactured homes and modular homes, to create a more dignified and contemporary image of affordable housing. The civic building envisions a community center in the form of a Repair Café, which challenges an unsustainable consumerist economy. The program combines leisure and recreation with light industrial components to promote traditional craftsmanship. As an overarching theme, the project attempts to bridge the gap between sustainability and affordability.
