Mexico City Aqueduct
Project Description
This project takes functional necessities like water infrastructure and coopts them to provide public recreational space in Mexico City. The local ridges and dips within the macroscopically smooth valley floor define a network of stormwater collection systems that wind through the neighborhoods of Tlatelolco and Atlampa. These are centered around floodable park basins within existing open spaces in the city. A system of aqueducts, covered walkways, and floodable parks serves as public spaces and an armature for smaller scale programs like playgrounds, community gardens, benches, etc. The walkways employ varying heights to extend the reach of each drainage basin and varying arch widths to modulate the walkways appropriately to their adjacencies. Pavilions mark the ends of the aqueduct lines and mediate the flow of water from aqueduct to park basin.
