Project Description

This artist colony addresses the ritual of dwelling and work for an artist living in the desert, emphasizing an ascetic lifestyle. It relates to the existing arching concrete pieces by Donald Judd. A key feature of Judd’s work is the repetition of serial elements. In response, this project for five artists aligns the building’s programs with the two existing structures in a single line across the desert. While Judd’s structures are quite expressive, the architecture is quiet. The result is a project that is unassertive from the outside but highly articulated and sculptural inside, contrasting with the flatness of the desert plains. The project is built almost entirely from 2x6 wooden members and plywood, a rough, modest material that ages well in the desert.
