Library Frame

Course
Advanced Design Studio: The Carnegie Library of the Future

Project Description

My perception of the space of the branch library is through framing. A frame indicates a certain spectatorship between a person on one side and the life happening on the other side. A frame is a space of encounter, and this is what a branch library is about. The branch library is no longer only about reading books, but reading others, reading neighborhoods and reading the city.

The library is constructed by a series of differentiated frames, small or big, thin or thick, open or enclosed, horizontal or vertical, a range of public spaces are structured and highlighted in the branch library. By looking at the interactions between the city, the books and the people, the branch library is more than just a building, it reflects the strata of the neighborhood, its people and its history.
