Project Description

After a period of abandonment and industrial decline the historic mill buildings of Lowell have once again returned to serve an economic function following their mass rehabilitation into high-end lofts. However, the city has now reached a point of saturation where no large mill buildings remain unconverted. This project mitigates the impact of future growth on Lowell by establishing guidelines for development along a new boundary surrounding the historic center. Selective preservation efforts within this intervention will return Lowell’s center to a condition of urban wilderness where residents and visitors will experience architecture as both object and environment.
