Project Description

Long-standing boundaries defined by the highway, the train, and the canals create a sprawling void disconnecting Downtown Lowell from its surrounding neighborhoods. Our proposal activates this void as a crossroads bridging these disparate but potentially symbiotic districts. Servicing all citizens, from the informal salesman to the wealthy businessman, we imagined an architectural ecology that embraces difference and necessity as programmatically and financially generative, spawning new hybrid typologies and public infrastructures. We broke the monolithic envelope of the traditional mill, allowing buildings to partner disparate programs. At the district scale distinct, overlapping zones centered on interventions compose a living and democratic urban ecology.
