Project Description

This proposal for a single-family house in New Haven’s West River neighborhood aims to encourage connection in a variety of ways, from the individual to the collective. The ‘no man’s land’ of the shared inner block is reconceived as a community green spine, while the non-conforming (sliver) lot side ‘alley’ is a generator for the house’s diagonal axis, which allows for transparency to the rear’s foliage and a softer boundary between neighbors. The heart of the house celebrates the natural environment through performative elements such as a rainwater collection system, trombe wall, and indoor garden as well as spiritual elements such as the hearth, kitchen, and meditation space.
