Title

Tactus: A new concert hall for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Authors
Shayari de Silva

Course
Advanced Design Studio: Gehry

Project Description

My approach for this project was to focus on the shared experience of a group of individuals listening to a single piece of music at the same time, which to me was the most extraordinary feature of the concert-hall experience, and to design a hall in which this condition could be optimized. The seating was designed to maximize engagement between the audience, the orchestra and the conductor. Seats are placed on pods each grouping approximately 60 audience members, to create a degree of intimacy while still maintaining the emphasis on the whole. In music theory, tactus refers to the pulse, or, tempo, of performed music. Based on the view that tactus is affected by both metrical structure and psychoacoustics, the goal for the BRSO’s new home was to give each member of the audience and of the orchestra a unique experience that contributes to the collective sound, or, pulse, of the room.
