Bridgeport by the Sea
Project Description
This project will revive Bridgeport’s waterfront identity by establishing a web of interconnected, pedestrian-friendly public realms. By providing a new storm water management system, the strain on the underground sewer lessens and prevents downstream flooding. Storm-water management is revealed above ground as a beautiful and performative system taking advantage of local conditions.
Beginning from towers located at topographic high points, a pedestrian path and water channel system guides residents through a series of new public squares that occupy formerly vacant lots. The path culminates in waterfront development sites with retrofitted industrial buildings and new mixed-use typologies that always include an elevated public realm and access to the river.
The project begins with a “light” phase illuminating the shores of the river and the subsequent water paths slated for development. The project redefines Bridgeport’s relationship with water as the physical paths and performative public squares gradually take shape.
