Course
Advanced Design Studio: Berlin Alexanderplatz

Project Description

Since the reunification of Berlin and in the city’s current housing shortage, Alexanderplatz has become a center of urban revitalization. Based on a master plan for the area by Professor Hans Kollhoff, the urban design sensitively takes into consideration the human scale of the street and the history of the neighborhood. The newly defined streets are shaped by a series of mixed use urban blocks, from which the residential towers rise, as if vertical extensions of the earth. This new tower aims to create a sense of identity for its residents, contribute positively to the public realm, and maintain a relationship with the city regardless of one’s position within the building. This project focuses on the architect’s responsibility to the urban environment, the importance of tectonics, the current state of urban dwelling, and the future of the city of Berlin.
