Project Description

The project investigates the permanence and flexibility of architecture, hardness and softness of materials, and bounded and fluid spaces. The intersection of three architectural systems - the roof, walls and the ground - challenges our ideas about the boundaries of space. The central open plaza serves as the main marketplace for seasonal outdoor community events and a daily farmer’s market. It is surrounded by the ferry terminal to the east, a warehouse to the northwest, and a library to the south of the plaza. An outdoor courtyard and waiting room allows views to the ferry and water. The contents of these programs are not confined by its walls but are allowed to “slip out” of its bounds by the spaces defined by the roof or the ground. Tables that serve the tasting kitchens, line-ups to get donuts from the cafe, and the pathway from the incubator to the library all demarcate a flexible zone beyond its confined compartment. The roof covering these spaces or the terraced ground plane help demarcate this territory.
