Corner Theatre
Project Description
Reaching out to the city and the audience it is intended to serve, the main auditorium and its gathering spaces are given pride-of-place on the corner. In addition to literally presenting the theater space to the city through its glazed side wall, this formal gesture embodies the shift in urban fabric, from the large, block-through developments of downtown to the anonymous warehouse-type buildings to the east. The turned theater volume cradles a sunken lobby in section and a new spillover plaza in plan between it and the Sony Center to the West. Finally, the turn opens up wedges within the building for the major front and back of house circulation routes. A winding stair theatrically provides access to both halves of the building. The smaller warehouse space is designed to be able to function independently from the mainstage for the use of other small tenant companies.
