The City of Lost Gold

Project Description

Nestled within the historic Minas do Palácio Velho in Ouro Preto, Brazil, this project delves into the intricate interplay between gold, mining, and the profound narratives of colonization and slavery that have shaped the region’s history. Drawing inspiration from the opulent intricacies of Baroque pearl necklaces, the design unfolds along a sinuous circulation path, seamlessly weaving through dispersed, enigmatic black box exhibition rooms within the valley via precarious narrow bridges and staircases, intricately mirroring the undulating topography of Ouro Preto. The judicious selection of materials such as charred wood, concrete, natural rock, golden metal, black granite, and channeled glass ensures a harmonious interplay of contrasts. The meandering circulation path escorts visitors through immersive museum spaces marked by sharp contrasts and varying scales.
