Project Description

Giving birth is a transformative life event for the birthing person and family. Here in the US, birth still predominantly happens in the hospitals where it’s treated as a medical condition rather than a physiological one. A birth center, by centering around birth and pregnancy, also seeks to cultivate a support system transitioning into parenthood. Overlooking the Long Island Sound, West Haven Waterfront Birth Center is a freestanding birth center led by midwives, providing midwifery care around the needs of the birthing person and families. The center will have birth suites, consultation rooms, an open-floor communal room for education and social programs, a cafe and waiting area for families, and housing for midwives and doulas.
