The City of Lost Gold

Project Description

This Museum of Gold in Ouro Prêto, Brazil, aims to encapsulate the city’s complex historical narrative by juxtaposing its opulent Baroque architecture embellished with gold against the haunting legacy of abandoned gold mines and the human labor they represent. This institution navigates this dual reality by establishing intimate connections between the exhibited golden artifacts and their origins—the historic mines concealed beneath its foundations. In doing so, the museum highlights the stark contrast between the beauty and labor that defines Ouro Prêto’s heritage.
