Project Description

Rapid population growth and sprawl have led to substantial overcrowding in and around Wudaokou Station, a subway station in the heart of Beijing’s university district through which as many as 20,000 people travel each hour. While intense congestion causes long lines and a good deal of yelling and pushing, it also contributes to the unique culture of Wudaokou. The neighborhood is replete with bars and restaurants––by our count, as many as five hundred within a half kilometer radius––which would be far less numerous if not for the high volume of foot traffic.

This project calls for the expansion of Wudaokou Station from an undersized node to an extensive network of public spaces dispersed across a four-block area. The new station takes the form of an undulating green roof built above existing roadways, providing much needed open space around dense retail clusters and transportation networks.
