Architecture is often described through buildings, drawings, and ideas. Yet architectural education is equally shaped by the people who bring those works into being. YSOA is a place where individuals arrive from different geographies, disciplines, and cultural traditions, each carrying distinct ways of seeing, speaking, drawing, and making. Within Rudolph Hall, these perspectives intersect, overlap, and transform one another. Retrospecta 49 takes these moments of encounter as its point of departure.
This volume is organized around three recurring conditions of that experience: Arriving, Becoming, and Departing. These are not simply markers of an academic calendar, but states that define architectural education at every scale.
Sprinkled with more than 50 languages spoken across the school, shaped by Cartography, our community is grounded in plurality. At a moment when conversations around diversity can feel increasingly constrained, we embrace plurality as a condition that expands architectural discourse.
