Free Migration
Project Description
This project leverages the frameworks of extrastate infrastructure space to facilitate not only free trade but also free migration. Migration is viewed as a constant phenomenon and refugees as part of a larger global network of constant mobility. Exemptions and allowances of free ports and international waters afforded to the movement of goods are extended to accommodate the mobility of people. Free Migration, then, is the architecture of space and time—presenting re-imaginations of the space of passage, leveraging time for productive, enriching journeys that confer on migrants the agency to determine their destinations.
The free port is intended as an outpost in these journeys that offers space for exchange between a migrating population and a stationary one. The ship acts as a mobile space whose arrival catalyzes the free port, creating new value through the intersection of two kinds of urbanisms.
