Chatham Square and Seward Park Libraries
Project Description
The Chatham Square and Seward Park Libraries are situated in close proximity to one another. They are products of the fragmentation of the urban fabric that characterized the Lower East Side in the 1900s. As Carnegie Libraries they have retained their form but have not yet successfully grown with the rest of the neighborhood. As such, these branch libraries require expansion. This project integrates them more within their individual contexts to re-embed them into the network of the neighborhood. Typological studies are used as a method of expansion. By expanding the branches parallel to one another, they can be developed into one library that serves as an assembly room for the neighborhood.
